Fundamental Philosophies of Systems Thinking in Business Management and Leadership

  • Systems thinking is a management regulation that provides an understanding of a system by testing the connections and communications between the factors that build the total of that defined system.
  • The entire system is a systems thinking perspective of the comprehensive organization in relation to its environment. It offers a tool of understanding, analyzing, and talking about the design and formation of the organization as a united, complex configuration of many interrelated systems (human and non-human) that require working with each other for the entire to function effectively.
  • Entire systems are built of systems, the basic unit, which include several entities (e.g. policies, processes, practices and people) and may be broken down into additional sub-systems.
  • Systems may be thought about as having clear external boundaries (closed) or having relations with their environment (open). An open systems view is the more common and accurate.
  • An organization as a unit can suffer systemic failure. This happens in the entire system or high-level system where there is a failure between and within the system components that require working with each other for general success.
  • Issues in systemic failure may include confused objectives, weak system-wide comprehension, faulty design, individual enticements that inspire faithfulness to sub-ordinate (rather than super-ordinate) objectives, insufficient feedback, poor collaboration, lack of accountability, etc.
  • The entire system success needs a performance management system that is leaning above the level of individual systems and their operative leadership. Factors may include group or team-level goal-setting, development, inducements, communication, reviews, rewards, responsibility. The purpose is to concentrate on what fixes individuals together and what binds systems together rather than functional silo performance.
