Agile Process Development | With Scrum

Agile

Scrum is the most popular agile project management framework because of its simplicity and high performance.

Scrum also takes advantage of a need for a sense of achievement, positive feedback, and ownership of work done within a teamwork environment.

People often think scrum and agile are the same thing because scrum is centered around continuous improvement, which is a core principle of agile. However, scrum is a framework for getting work done, where agile is more of a mindset.

Although scrum and agile are similar, here are some of the key differences:

  • Scrum values rigidity, whereas agile is more flexible
  • Agile leaders play a vital role, while scrum promotes a cross-functional team that is self-functioning
  • Agile involves face-to-face interactions between cross-functional team members, while scrum involves daily stand-up meetings
  • Agile is meant to be kept simple, while scrum can be innovative and experimental

Agile scrum methodology consists of two sets of roles: core roles, known as “pigs,” and ancillary roles, known as “chickens.”

There are three core roles: scrum master, product owner and scrum team. All of these people are committed to the scrum project.

A key principle of Scrum is the dual recognition that customers will change their minds about what they want or need. This concept is often called requirements volatility. Because of this, Scrum adopts an evidence-based empirical approach, which states that a problem cannot be fully understood or defined up front.

The collective benefits of an agile scrum methodology are substantial, such as:

  • Lower costs
  • Employee/customer satisfaction
  • Organizational synergy
  • Quality improvement
  • Adaptability and flexibility

Some point to the agile scrum methodology’s flexibility as being its greatest benefit. With the sprint-based model, the scrum team typically receives feedback from stakeholders after each sprint.
