Swarmia Workshop Training

Swarm robotics is the study of robotic systems consisting of a large group of relatively small and simple robots that interact and cooperate with each other in order to jointly solve tasks that are outside their own individual capabilities.

Swarmia Workshop Training by TonexSwarm robotic systems typically exhibit interesting properties such as high degrees of parallelism, redundancy, and robustness. They are also highly adaptive to changes in the environment, and show good scalability to increased problem and/or swarm size.

Swarm robotics concepts are inspired by the field of swarm intelligence (SI), which studies the collective behavior of (natural or artificial) self-organizing agents. Examples of such collectives are cell populations, ant colonies, bee swarms, or bird flocks.

As with traditional AI, the key to swarm robotics is the algorithym. Swarm algorithms are characterized by individual entities following local rules, resulting in the emergence of overall behaviour through swarm interactions.

In swarm robotics, robots exhibit local behaviours based on a set of rules ranging from basic reactive mapping to complex local algorithms. These behaviours often involve interactions with the physical environment, such as other robots and surroundings. The interaction process involves retrieving environmental values and subsequently processing them to drive the actuators in accordance with a set of instructions. This recurring process is referred to as the fundamental activity and persists until the desired state is attained.

While its potential is considerable, Swarm robotics is still a developing field, and several technical challenges need to be addressed to make it a viable solution for industrial automation.

Yet, some companies are forging ahead with swarm robotics. Amazon, for instance, is using swarm robots in its warehouses to automate the process of picking and packing orders. The swarm robots work together to move products around the warehouse and deliver them to human workers, who then pack the orders.

Then there’s DHL, which is using swarm robots to automate the process of sorting packages at its distribution centers. The swarm robots work together to move packages from one conveyor belt to another, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process

Researchers at the Wyss Institute are developing RoboBees, bee-sized robots that can be used for pollination and environmental monitoring tasks.
