Cybersecurity Courses

Cybersecurity Courses: Cybercrime has become so prevalent and so menacing that there’s now a National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. That month, fittingly, is October, the month of tricks or treats.

But while Halloween is cute, cybercrime is not. Forbes estimated that cybersecurity spending in the U.S. would reach $66 billion by the end of 2018. Globally that number could reach close to $100 billion.

Worth noting is how cybercrime is evolving. Bad actors used to attack servers and workstations directly. Now they’re directly targeting mobile applications and users in order to breach networks and compromise data.

One particular cyberscam that really took off in 2018 was cryptojacking, which is the secret use of your computer or mobile device to mine cryptocurrency. Hackers do this by either getting the victim to click on a malicious link in an email that loads crypto mining code on the computer, or by infecting a website or online ad with JavaScript code that auto-executes once loaded in the victim’s browser.

No one knows for certain how much cryptocurrency is mined through cryptojacking, but there’s no question that the practice is rampant. According to Trend Micro, cryptojacking scams increased by 141 percent in 2018.

A recent CA Technologies survey found that 90 percent of organizations feel vulnerable to malicious or accidental insider attacks – and rightly so. Industries, small companies and individuals are all likely victims of cyberattacks.

Even charities get hacked. Save the Children Federation, which conducts charity operations in countries across the world, told the Boston Globe that last year hackers gained entry into an employee’s email account. The hackers then used fake invoices and other means to fraudulently direct about $1 million to a fraudulent entity based in Japan.
