It would appear that there is a shortage of qualified strategic leaders as illustrated by a PwC study of 6,000 senior executives. Respondents were asked a series of questions designed to reveal their leadership preferences, and their answers were then analyzed to determine their leadership style. Only 8 percent of the respondents turned out to be strategic leaders effective at leading transformations.
The study also showed that strategic leaders are more likely to be women, and that the percentage of strategic leaders increases with age — particularly age 45 and up.
The study clearly illustrated that an organization’s leaders must first understand their organization’s mission in order to be strategic. This means fully grasping why the company exists, who its customers are and how exactly it can provide value for them.
Another key is for strategic leaders to create a vision of what that mission will look like at a specified time in the future. That and crafting a strategy to put that vision into motion.
