Length: 2 Days

BESS Safety — Fire, Explosion, Electrical, Mechanical & Fire Suppression Training by Tonex

Certified BESS Installation, Commissioning, and Operations & Maintenance Specialist

This 2-day course provides practical safety training for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with emphasis on lithium-ion systems, thermal runaway, fire propagation, explosion hazards, electrical shock/arc-flash risks, mechanical hazards, fire detection, suppression, ventilation, emergency response, and compliance. The course aligns with current safety references including NFPA 855, UL 9540A, and 2024 IFC Chapter 12 energy-system provisions. NFPA describes NFPA 855 as covering ESS fire protection, detection/suppression, explosion control, exhaust ventilation, gas detection, and thermal runaway; UL 9540A is used to evaluate thermal runaway fire propagation behavior.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify major BESS hazards: fire, explosion, electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and environmental.
  • Explain thermal runaway causes, propagation paths, warning signs, and mitigation strategies.
  • Apply BESS safety codes, standards, and testing concepts including NFPA 855, UL 9540/9540A, NEC/NFPA 70 concepts, and IFC Chapter 12.
  • Evaluate fire detection, suppression, ventilation, gas detection, and explosion-control options.
  • Perform basic hazard analysis for containerized, building-integrated, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale BESS.
  • Develop emergency response, isolation, lockout/tagout, inspection, and maintenance safety practices.
  • Review lessons learned from BESS incidents and translate them into design and operational controls.

Target Audience

Engineers, safety professionals, facility managers, fire marshals, emergency responders, project developers, EPC teams, utility personnel, battery technicians, commissioning teams, O&M personnel, risk managers, and AHJ/code-compliance reviewers.
