6G continues to receive attention as the wireless communications technology of the future, but it’s 5G that is currently being used and to the surprise of many – it’s actually about to live up to its original promise in the form of 5G Advanced.

A year ago, 3GPP’s Release 18 marked the start of 5G Advanced, which is still evolving.

5G Advanced is set to bring 5G to its fullest, richest capabilities. It will create a foundation for more demanding applications and a wider range of use cases than ever before with a truly immersive user experience based on extended reality (XR) features.

5G Advanced will provide all kinds of smart connectivity, including services that focus on uplink communication and connect people moving at high velocities, such as those on trains and on planes.

5G Advanced will also efficiently support highly immersive and interactive applications, which will be widely deployed in the entertainment, training and education sectors.

Many experts in this field also see 5G Advanced as an eventual handoff to 6G in different technical areas, including channel modeling, duplex evolution and an AI/ML framework.

In fact, 3GPP’s next release, Release 19, will look at ways of channel modeling for new 6G bands in the 7 to 24 GHz range, as the current channel models don’t take into account the different properties of objects in terms of how signals would be reflected back.

And yet another technical study will focus on the duplex evolution for avoiding performance degradation from new interference scenarios.

Developing a framework for the use of AI/ML in 5G Advanced will furthermore pave the way for future 6G studies.
