Capture the Flag (CTF) is a cybersecurity competition that is used to test and develop computer security skills.
During a Capture the Flag event, participants as individuals or teams are challenged to find and exploit vulnerabilities in a system to capture a “flag” or piece of information.
Many experts in this field believe that CTF competitions are a great way to increase awareness and skill set across an organization, while also incorporating gamification to its teams’ cybersecurity training. Skills that can be sharpened from playing CTF include building critical thinking skills and enhancing your methodology or approach for a real-world engagement.
Participating as a team member can also enhance your technical and communication skills as well as introducing basics for categories you normally would not be interested in.
A Jeopardy CTF is one of the more popular types of competition, which includes problems (challenges) like web, machines, digital forensics, reverse engineering, OSINT, and others.
Teams or individuals gain points for any correct challenge they solve.
Points are defined depending on the difficulty of the challenge, (i.e., challenges labeled as hard will help you to gain more points).
A jeopardy competition is further broken down into different categories, such as:
- Reverse engineering
- Cryptography
- Digital forensics
- Web security
- Exploitation
- Machines
- Network security
Basic skills required to play CTF include an understanding of networking and programming (python, assembly and C/C++ for reverse category).
Linux command line skills are also useful.
