CPM Training, Critical Path Method

CPM training provides you with the procedure for scheduling a range of project activities. CPM is used in all forms of projects including construction, aerospace and defense, software development, research projects, product development, engineering, and plant maintenance, to name a few.

One of the most difficult tasks that any project manager can perform is managing a great-scale project that needs directing several actions across the organization. A numerous of details must be taken into consideration in planning how to organize all these actions, in developing an accurate timetable, and then in overseeing the development of the project.

Project Networks

  • Project actions explained by a network
  • The activity-on-node (AON) model
  • Nodes represent activities, arrows specify the precedence relationships
  • The activity-on-arc (AOA) model
  • AON applied in practical, non-optimization cases, AOA is applied in optimization settings
  • First apply AON, then AOA
  • Major idea for both AON and AOA is to recognize the CPM

Network Analysis

  • Network timetabling:
    • Major goal of CPM is to recognize the CPM identify the shortest finishing time for a project
    • Use forward and backward pass procedures to assess the project network
  • Network regulation:
    • Oversee progress of a project on the basis of the network schedule
    • Modifying the actions when necessary

Basic Steps in CPM

  • Break down the project into separate tasks and activities
  • Identify the priority relationships between tasks
  • Draw the arrow diagram, or AOA Diagram, or Project Network demonstrating priority relationships
  • Approximate the tasks length
  • Apply CPM to timetable actions over time to shorten the length of project
  • In performing, if any job postponed, apply CPM to review timetable for remaining tasks
