Cybersecurity is necessary in logistic and supply chain management for supply chain resilience.

That’s because today’s supply chains are highly interconnected, a threat to one partner (a third-party vendor, for instance) constitutes a threat to the entire supply chain.

To prevent breaches and maintain manufacturing, distribution, and fulfillment processes, organizations must stay ahead of malicious actors and evolving cyber threats. Businesses need risk management programs that address attack vectors across the supply chain.

According to one report, some 20% of breaches are caused by supply chain attacks. Typically, these are incidents in which cyber attackers exploit a vulnerability in one organization to compromise data and assets at other points in the supply chain.

These breaches take longer to detect and contain than other types of attacks, with a global average of 277 days.

Cybersecurity professionals say the top supply chain vulnerabilities include:

  • Databases
  • Cloud storage
  • Compromised credentials

Experts in this area believe organizations need to build cybersecurity awareness. This can be done by building an information security awareness program that alerts employees to potential attack vectors and common attack techniques in your supply chain.

These programs should focus on educating your teams on how to engage secure vendors and where to look for supplier vulnerabilities.

Other strategies to mitigate supply chain risk include providing attack-proof employee credentials and communications. In reality, a single credential oversight can caused many debilitating cyber-attacks.

All it takes is one malicious email link or one malware download. Impress upon your employees the importance of login and password security for cyber-attack prevention and supply chain resilience.

Consider training and testing your employees on detecting phishing emails, securing their software and devices, and identifying malware.
