If this isn’t the best of time for mobile app development, it’s awfully close to it.

The metrics are pretty convincing. There’s an estimated 12 million mobile app developers, and they still can’t come close to keeping up with consumers’ appetite for new apps.

Here’s why, as reported by Statista:

  • The number of smartphone users worldwide jumped from 1.57 billion in 2013 to a projected 2.87 billion in 2020.
  • In 2017, there were 197 billion downloads of mobile apps. This figure is expected to reach 350 billion in 2021.
  • In 2016, the total revenue generated across all mobile operating systems reached $88 billion. By 2020, this number is expected to reach a staggering $189 billion.

According to Localytics.com, about 42 percent of all purchases on Black Friday in 2017 were made using mobile devices, says Localytics.com.

And do Americans spend much time on their mobile phones? The eMarketer reports that adults in the U.S. spend three hours 15 minutes a day using their smartphone, which is almost one hour longer, compared to the data in 2013. That’s a lot of air time when you factor in the Pew Research Center’s research that shows nearly 80 percent of Americans now own smartphones (compared to just 35 percent in 2013).

And these numbers are just for adults.

Despite parents insisting that 11 is the ideal age for children to have a phone, one survey found that 25 percent of children 6 years old and younger have their own mobile — and nearly half of these spend up to 21 hours per week on their devices. Researchers also found eight in 10 parents don’t limit the amount of time children spend on their phones while 75 percent don’t disable the data function so their children are only able to call and text.

Translation: even more app downloads.
