What is PPAP?

Production part approval process (PPAP) is a protocol applied mostly in the automotive industry. PPAP is a section of the advanced product quality planning (APQP). It is often in the form of a series of agreements between the different sectors of automotive manufacturing and the main automotive companies, on the time the parts should be built and delivered.

Background of PPAP

The origin of the PPAP goes back to the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) in 1993. The first PPAP was conducted with Ford, GMs, and Chrysler. The 4th edition of the PPAP, which is also the most recent version, was presented by AIAG in 2006.

While the PPAP is primarily designed for the automotive industry, some other industries have started using this standard as well.

What is the Purpose of PPAP?

The main objective of using PPAP is to advance the automotive components for the both sides of the suppliers and the big automotive companies.

Another purpose is to create an agreement between the supplier and the customer based on which the supplier guarantees that it meet the customer’s performance specifications and requirements. Supplier also is responsible to provide and deliver the agreed parts within an agreed time period and for a specified price.

PPAP Approval Elements

  • The customer’s requirements and specifications are considered
  • The delivered parts meet the PPAP and customer’s requirements
  • The process is able to produce compliant parts
  • The established system for control plan and quality management can prevent, identify, and eliminate/fix the non-conforming parts ready to be delivered to customers or be used in vehicles

Advantages and Benefits of PPAP

  • To submit and develop packages in a more effective way
  • Enhances the quality of products, thus reducing waste
  • Effectively communicate and inform changes in products/processes specifications
  • Provides useful and effective feedback for future products

Since there is no standardized PPAP for other industries, companies who adopted this manual have often developed their own internal requirements based on the AIAG requirements. For example, in the aerospace industry, When AS9100, the aerospace quality management system, moves from Rev C to Rev D, some sort of minimum requirements for aerospace PPAP need to be included. Below are the common aerospace PPAP requirements that companies follow:

Aerospace PPAP Requirements

  • Production PO and Demand Fulfillment
  • Production Drawings
  • Change Documents
  • Customer Engineering Approval Documents
  • DFMEA
  • PFDs
  • PFMEA
  • Dimensional Report
  • Production Verification Testing
  • Process Approval and Non-Destructive Testing
  • Measurement System Analysis Studies
  • Engineering Planning/Source Approval
  • Initial Process and Readiness Study
  • Material Certification Documentation
  • Control Plan
