Sensor Fusion Courses
Sensor Fusion Courses: Sensor fusion (sometimes referred to as sensor-data fusion) is the use of sensory data from multiple sources, combined into one comprehensive result.
Using multiple sensors, planners can generate more robust data models or obtain greater numbers of data points for the purposes of a given system.
Many sensory fusion models emulate models in the human body – especially the brain. Every second our brain monitors sensors such as eyes, ears, nose, etc., and processes the generated data. This data from our five senses working together allows us to immediately analyze a situation to make better decisions.
If we had sight but not the sense of smell, for example, we wouldn’t be able to tell water from vinegar. In this way, the field of senor and data fusion reduces a level of uncertainty that couldn’t be achieved from sources used individually rather than collectively.
Sensor fusion systems are useful in image processing, in certain kinds of scientific research installations, and in camera systems, as well as many other types of systems. One common example of a sensor array would consist of an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer. The fusion of these three data sources provide helpful localization data for a device or other use.
The military has been a pioneer in sensor-data fusion to obtain a lower detection error probability and a higher reliability by using data from multiple distributed sources.
In 1987, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) Data Fusion Subgroup developed a definition of data fusion which was further refined as “a multilevel, multifaceted process dealing with the automatic detection, association, correlation, estimation, and combination of data and information from single and multiple sources.”
For military applications, the intelligence extracted from data fusion makes it easier for analysts to identify potential adversaries and their targets. By organizing and collecting large volumes of collected data, relevant patterns can be recognized using data fusion.
Experts believe that in the future, sensor fusion will be an intricate part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded systems.
