First 5G NR Specs and 5G Radio Trials
5G New Radio (NR) specification is the first part of the global 5G standard: the non-standalone architecture leveraging the LTE and the NR air interfaces and existing LTE core network for early 2019 deployments.
The standalone version of 3GPP 5G NR or 5G NR Non-Standalone (NSA) mode, is not completed yet and the specification is expected to be finished in June 2018 as part of the 3GPP Release 15.
5G NR for interoperability development trials will start by many operators including AT&T, Sprint, Telstra, and Vodafone in 2018.
Verizon, Qualcomm, and Novatel Wireless have plans to collaborate on 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave) technology development and over-the-air field trials based on the Release 15 specifications.
