MBSE (model based systems engineering) is a key enabling technology for Systems Engineers who seek to transition from traditional Systems Engineering processes that are document-based and code-centric to more efficient and effective processes that are model-driven.

MBSE seeks to reduce rework and errors through the use of a central model that is accessible to all those involved in the engineering process.

While MBSE is not a panacea for all of an organization’s issues, it is a proven approach for improving productivity because it’s a single system model that is authoritative, durable and unambiguous.

MBSE also promotes communication, produces more seamless gate transitions, and documents/charts are generated from the mode, which reduces time and the expense of making slides from gate reviews.

Other benefits of using MBSE include:

  • Improves quality
  • Reduces risk
  • Addressed complexity
  • Enables a system model to be viewed from multiple perspectives

MBSE is now favored by many organizations because it supports fast learning cycles and helps mitigate risks early in the product life cycle. Models facilitate early learning by testing and validating specific system characteristics, properties or behaviors, enabling fast feedback on design decisions.

As the name implies, MBSE features models as the primary data source. Developing a set of related system models help define, design and document a system under development. These models provide an efficient way to explore, update and communicate system aspects to stakeholders, while significantly reducing or eliminating dependence on traditional documents.

Models and learning cycles Models can predict performance (response time, reliability) or physical properties (heat, radiation, strength). They explore design alternatives for user experience or response to an external stimulus. But models don’t only explore technical design alternatives. The practices of design thinking and user-centered design are synergistic with MBSE and help validate assumptions sooner.

Want to know more about MBSE modeling? Tonex offers Model Based Testing | Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), a 3-day hands-on project based training course. Model based Testing/Model Based Engineering covers the formalized application of modeling to support systems analysis, use cases, requirements, design, analysis, testing, verification and validation activities.

Tonex also offers a dozen different MBSE courses that encompass both theoretical and practical material. These courses include:
